Another ship class derived from the Excelsior II-class of starship was the Odessa-class Fast Frigate. While similar to the Hastings-class ships, the Odessa-class vessels were designed to function as rapid support ships, able to reach trouble spots and provide fire support faster than any other class of starship built at that time (approximately 70 years ago). The actual result was not as effective as was hoped, but the ships of this class were still well-received by their crews. Of the seventeen ships originally constructed ten have been destroyed, two are classified as 'Lost' by Starfleet, and the remaining five have recently been placed back in active service because of the war with the Dominion.
The U.S.S. Gravesend (NCC-19602) is probably the most famous of these ships. While patrolling the Klingon border in 2345, the Gravesend picked up a distress call from a Klingon outpost on the planet Narendra III. The call stated that the outpost was under attack by Romulan forces and needed urgent assistance. The Gravesend was the second Federation ship to arrive on the scene and found, to the crew's horror, that another Federation ship had already arrived in the system and had been destroyed by the Romulans, who had retreated by the time the Gravesend arrived. By giving immediate medical treatment to the survivors of the outpost, a bond was formed between Federation and Klingon citizens that helped lead to the peace accords between the two governments.
Even today, many Klingons regard the Gravesend as a tangible symbol of the peace between the Klingon Empire and the Federation.
